At St Mary's, the children enjoy Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) throughout Key Stage 2.  We focus on learning French alongside the other schools in our pyramid and Multi Academy Trust, in preparation for learning French at secondary school.

Our MFL curriculum should deepen children’s understanding of the world and inspire their curiosity about other cultures. Children will learn vocabulary and grammar structures to help them communicate in French; both orally and using the written word. Early on, through songs and familiar phrases, children will develop listening skills and be able to repeat modelled words and phrases. Children will be exposed to French literature and culture and be able to read and understand age appropriate texts.

The children's learning is based on three 'Big Ideas' or core concepts that we seek to develop in the children.  Our 'Big Ideas' are:

Understanding, Expression and Curiosity

Pupils engage in practical activities to build understanding and develop their ability to express their ideas in French.
